In my quest to turn everyone I meet into a thriftanista, I often hear a recurring complain — “The thrift stores near me don’t have great pieces that you seem to find.” Yes, no two thrift stores will have the exact same pieces. But that does not mean you cannot find something to add to your closet from every thrift store. The number one rule in becoming a thrift pro is thinking outside the box when it comes to thrifting.
Take for example this beautiful lace top. I found this lace top at a San Diego Salvation Army for $.50cents. It was actually$1.00 but I was there on a day where everything was 50% off. At first glance, for some, it might have appeared “grandma like” or plain ugly. The top had these ridiculous sized shoulder pads and a huge flower on one side where it’s pulled up a little bit. I did not let those ghastly fashion missteps stop me from capitalizing on a .50cents deal. What I was most concerned about was the fit, the length and the beautiful lace details. Everything else I knew was just a matter of thinking outside the box and revamping it a little to suit my modern needs.
Styling this outfit for a date night out with hubby, I removed the shoulder pads and the ridiculous flower. Since the top was clearly see through, I added a white camisole underneath.
I choose to wear these skinny jogging pants for some more structure to the outfit. I thrifted these jogging pants at Buffalo Exchange on my latest San Diego Thrifting Bus Tour. These pants are definitely a big fall fashion fave by many bloggers this season and I was very happy to get my hands on these beautiful and comfy pants for only $11.00. Honestly, they are seriously comfortable.
Adding these beautiful pointed to animal print pumps simply made this outfit stand out for me. I had been eyeing these pumps on Victoria Secrets for quite some time, but, you guys know my serious condition against paying full price for anything.
They originally came on the market for $98. Definitely out of my price range for shoes. I waited, and waited and waited until they hit their clearance low at $29.99 and then made the purchase. I ordered them a size higher than I normally wear and hit jackpot with that decision. They are not too high and actually quite comfortable for even walking! Add some simple accessories and felt really good that I thought outside the box when I scooped up this .50cents lace top!
Have you been thrifting lately? Do you try to think outside the box when coming across a unique piece?
Thrifting is awesome when you are in a great location for it. The area where I’m in, thrifting is as good as buying a vintage one of a kind piece from a boutique.

Lol, I was reading this as I smile all the way. So am not alone. I have thought out of the box all the time that I have been in thrifts Markets and I can totally relate. Beautiful look, love the lace top and the shoes
I think outside the box. To a certain degree. I have yet to master the art fully 😉 But sure as, I’ve been trying out many things I wouldn’t have considered shopping only at retail stores.
That said, I think it takes a bit of wanting to get outside your comfort zone to fully embrace thrift style, because no two days you are going to look the same 😛

Great tip!!! I need to remember this the next time I go to Goodwill. I’ve been about four times now, but only made one purchase.
okay Diva, that was a great deal on the lace top…but those shoes….OMG!!!!
That top is such a steal and you did a marvelous job on revamping. Love our local thrift shops!! xx

I love this entire out, especially those shoes!
You look so cute. I’m going to have to work on thinking outside the box.
i love thrifting…it’s a lot harder to run in quickly with 2 kids in tow so i don’t do it very often now…but it’s seriously one of my favorite things to do!
I just want to sneak a peek inside your wardrobe, everything you have you pair so nicely together!
love that lace top!! yeah i have the hardest time thinking outside the box when it comes to picking pieces and outfits.. but i’m always amazed when others pick out things i would never pick out and make an amazing outfit out of it.
See, I am so not on your level. I shoulder pads would have been a deal breaker for me. It never would have even occurred to me to remove them.
But super hot. Love the shoes!
That lace top looks far more expensive the 50c, it’s beautiful!
Your skin is so flawless… and those pumps!! Love love love!
OMG I LOVE how you styled this look! That top is so cute. I see things like that thrifting, but never get them. #inpisred.

Style Honestly
Obsessed with those pants!
This outfit looks wonderful on you, and I LOVE those heels.
You always inspire me! I need to just go for it and visit our stores here in town!
Love the lace love love the shoes just wow and the trousers, miss that’s my favourite colour. You look fab
Very true – most people don’t have the patience for thrifting, and it’s quite unfortunate that every find is pretty much once in a life time. Not that there aren’t a million white lace tops out there, but if I were to go to my goodwill right now and hope to find one, chances are I would not.
I like to thrift with certain pieces in mind, like right now I want a cashmere sweater. I’m not being too picky about color or style, just want to see what I can find!
It’s all about inspiration and girl, you give that in spades! Thanks!
