This ankara maxi skirt is LIFE! I honestly feel like a queen when I get the chance to rock this beautiful skirt. If you follow me, you already know that I am simply drawn to bold colors and prints. Thus, an ankara skirt would always satisfy my need to make a statement without saying a word.
I am often asked how do I choose my thrifted pieces. When I thrift, I am normally drawn into pieces that simply catch my eye such as bright colors, patterns, textures, etc. I don’t simply thrift for designer clothes, but I must tell you, knowing your designers is a huge plus when thrifting as you are able to quickly determine when you have scored an awesome find. Truth be told, a used Target t-shirt for $2–not such a deal, as you can get that same deal often in Target’s clearance section. However, a used Banana Republic cashmere sweater for $3— now that is a a steal! Learn how to spot quality fabrics and brands from a distance.
I’ll be honest with you, I often do a lot of research (google) at the thrift store when I am unsure of a particular designer. I normally want to know what are the retail prices for the designers’ items, where it’s sold or even what pieces came out in which season. I recently took a friend thrifting at a Goodwill here in San Diego. As it had started really feeling chilly outside, I wanted to focus on thrifting only sweaters during this particular trip. While walking down the sweater aisle, I spotted this beautiful knit sweater and immediately pulled it from the rack. Checking the tag, imagine my surprise when I saw that it was a St John for Neiman Marcus sweater. These sweaters normally retail at $400, but here at Goodwill, I was going to walk away with it for $8.00. Of course, if I didn’t realize who the designer was, I would not have realized just how much of a score this was!
I added this thrifted Banana Republic khaki blazer to the outfit for a layered look. I love blazers, and probably 99% of the blazers I own are thrifted. This Banana Republic blazer was thrifted from the Salvation Army here in San Diego for $4.50. Of course, we all know that Banana Republic blazers start at $150. Once again, an easy score here.
I went with these vegan leggings that I got last year. These continue to be my absolute favorite tights as you can see that they have made numerous appearances on this blog like here, here and here.
I completed the outfit with these thrifted Loeffler Randall polka dot heels. I thrifted these heels at Housing Works in NYC last year for $18, which was a major score as they retailed for $440 at Neiman Marcus. Finally, my pocketbook was also thrifted from Goodwill for $3. I thrifted it because I loved the design on the front, it’s genuine leather and very unique.
What has been one of your biggest thrift score?
First, I think every woman should have at least one midi skirt in her closet. Second, I think every woman should have at least one fabulous clutch in her closet. I was recently invited to a preview of the Neiman Marcus fall fashion line. Follow my next post for my review of the fall trends. But, back to this post. After getting the invitation, the first thing that went through my mind was “what am I going to wear?”
I wanted a classic “day” look as it was a midday event. After a
more than few looks I decided on this beautiful full midi skirt. I have heard a lot of women say that styling full midi skirts can be difficult to style. I’m not saying it can’t be tricky at times, but it’s all about balance. Since the midi skirt is “full”, then the top should be form fitting. The top should be able to work with the skirt to accentuate an hourglass shape. I got this ASOS midi skirt from Buffalo Exchange in San Diego for $18. And, yes, I do silent screams in the fitting room when I find items on my thrift wish list. But in this case, this was pure perfection with a tag price under $20, so an audible YESSSSS was appropriate!
Since the star of the show here is this green full midi skirt, I went with a simple, form fitting, silk black tee from Banana Republic which was a gift to me from another fashionista. The details around the collar is so glamorous. Tucked into the midi skirt and belted, the tee does not outdo the skirt but makes it’s own statement.
If you have been following me for a while, you know that I am not shy about color. I could have easily gone with a pair of black pumps, but why pass up the chance to throw in a “pop of color.” I literally stalked the internet to find these Jessica Simpson’s yellow snake print heels. First, they were sold out everywhere, and when I did find it at certain locations, their prices weren’t “thrifty” enough for me. I finally found them at Century 21 Department online store on sale for $45 with free shipping! That was at least half the price I had seen at many other stores. These heels are everything to me! And, they were the perfect fit for my full midi skirt look here.
Completing this look is this printed black and white magazine clutch. I have a serious thing for clutches. I tend to gravitate towards clutches over any other type of purses 9 out of 10 times. This clutch is my new FAVORITE clutch that I own. It’s pure elegance and adds that final touch to any outfit. This outfit felt complete with the addition of the clutch.
