If you’d rather reach for a pair of jeans than a mini skirt on any given day, I don’t blame you. But, wearing mini skirts does not have to be a complicated process. Most people think that mini skirts are one of those trends that “isn’t for everyone,” or that only “a certain kind of person” can pull off.
I will concede that mini skirts are not for all body types and all ages. But when the body type, age, and situation are aligned in favor of these diva garments, it is definitely worth wearing this ultra-feminine style, that celebrates the female silhouette. By following some simple fashion tips, you can put together a mini skirt ensemble that is chic, practical, and fashion-forward. They also have a way of bringing out the “inner diva” in all of us. I must emphasis that mini skirts are not always the appropriate thing to wear for some occasions. You can wear a mini skirt for a night out at the club, on a summer day off from work, or to meet friends for drinks or dinner on a weekend. However, mini skirts do not work well in office environments, schools, churches, or business meetings.
Knowing how to style the mini skirt ensemble can make or break an outfit. Styled correctly, mini skirts can actually look super cool, fierce and stylish. The key to styling a mini skirt is balance and proportion. You should aim to keep the balance throughout your whole outfit when trying to create a modest look with a mini skirt. Since the mini skirt is already giving us sexy, go modest with your top. If you’re baring your legs without tights, covering your arms always helps to balance the look up top.
Here, I got this awesome J Crew embroidered peplum mini skirt from a friend who was doing some purging of her closet. As you already know, I am thrifty when it comes to my wardrobe purchases. And, nothing says a true score when you get it for free, when the original price tag stated $78. As I discussed above, if your skirt is short, cover up on top. That means steer away from plunging necklines or strapless tops. I played down this particularly flirty mini skirt with a conservative polka dot thrifted from the Salvation Army for $3.50. The navy blue and orange colors definitely caught my attention while browsing. Of course, the price cannot be beaten.
I opted for these Jessica Simpson booties that I got from Macy’s online, for $24 during a clearance sale. This heeled ankle boots gave the midi skirt a lift and rounded out the ensemble nicely. Lastly I accessorized with this floral clutch, which I used to do some print mixing with the blouse. You have probably seen this clutch styled in this outfit here on the blog.
Lastly, to obtain the ultimate confident look, be comfortable in your mini skirt. Do not keep pulling it down or tug at it when you sit as this will make you appear self-conscious. No one likes to be around someone who isn’t confident in their own clothes! I hope that I have inspired you to rock some cute mini skirts.

That skirt is so cute! I love that there are ways to wear them that won’t make me look like a “trying too hard to be young again ” type mom lol
This is such a cute look! I never know how to style mini skirts but I love this look, especially the boots!
You said it if the body and mood are right then the mini will work. It definitely works for you. I love your style and spending habits.
I love your sense of style! I might need to get me a pair of those boots, they’re adorable.
You really styled that well. Looks really nice, and even though it’s a mini skirt, it doesn’t really look like it. I would never wear one just because I don’t feel comfortable in one, but I hope to see more women wear it like you.
You look AMAZING!!! Love what you’ve done here in terms of style. I can’t rock a mini skirt – as much as I want to be a lady I’m hopeless at wearing skirts and constantly worried that I’ll flash someone haha! So pants are always safer for me
How adorable! You did a great job. I don’t look good in mini skirts at all though. Bummer!
Very cute outfit! Love the booties with the skirt! I’d love an outfit like this. You look amazing!
Mini skirts are adorable and they’re versatile too, I love your tips here and how you styled your outfit! You look so fab in that skirt! And that purse of yours is lovely!
Thanks for the tips on how to pull it off! It has always been tricky to look tasteful when the shorter skirts come out.
I do love your look! Those boots are amazing. The block heels look like they would be a steady heel. Is that true?
I love the bootie paired with the mini skirt. It looks especially chic with the open-toed or strappy booties; something you can rock from now through fall.
I love your style! I wish I was still younger and cute. When I lived in NYC I was so stylish, now I work from home in GA and some days I barely get out of sweat pants. My credit cards are thanking me, but I miss the “show” as it were.
Oh man I am LOVING that top. Very nice way that everything came together.
You are so freaking cute! And ROCKING the mini skirts! I’m a big fan of mini skirts as well but I don’t wear them with the ankle booties often – adorable!
I agree, how you style a skirt can make it or break it. I like the idea of wearing a conservative top when you’re wearing a short skirt or a mini skirt. Great tips!
