I consider a pencil skirt a foundational item in a woman’s wardrobe.  There is nothing wrong with having some trendy items in your closet.  However, if building a stylish but practicable closet, there are some items that you absolutely need ready and waiting in your closet.  These items are considered foundational wardrobe items.  These pieces must be 1) flattering and 2) versatile.  When you have these base items, you will never run out of things to wear, and you will end up buying less because you won’t be trying to fill that unidentifiable void in your closet.  The pencil skirt ticks those boxes.

It’s really not a surprise that pencil skirts continue to outlast all trends.   No matter your body type, rocking a hip-hugging pencil skirt can flatter your figure, make you appear slimmer, and look chic no matter the occasion.  This timeless wardrobe items has been boosting the confidence of women everywhere for decades and it’s now hotter than ever.  If you don’t already own a pencil skirt, you should absolutely put this piece on your shopping list.

Fit and length are the two most important details that you must pay attention to when it comes to the pencil skirt.  Pencil skirts tend to be most flattering when the hem ends around the knees. It can be slightly above or below but not any shorter.  Thankfully, you do not have to have the perfect proportions to wear a pencil skirt.  If you want to hide your tummy, wear cardigan sweater over your blouse and accentuate your waist with tiny belt. This will draw attention from your tummy and balance the proportions of the whole look.  I purchased this beautiful floral pencil skirt from Asos several years ago for under $20 on sale.  You can check out how I styled it completely differently on the blog before, here.

I love the floral print on this pencil skirt.  The colors, and the print give me the opportunity to play with different tops to style this skirt differently each time I wear it.  If you are looking to add a pencil skirt to your wardrobe, look for a print or color that you know you would get various outfits from that one skirt.

As I was heading to an evening reception, I choose this black sleeveless feather trim top.  I found this beauty at Macy’s, in the Last Act clearance section for $11.98.   Yes, that price is correct.   I don’t own a lot of black pieces, but when I saw this unique top with the feathers, I immediately grabbed it up.

Completing this look are these thrifted Eva Mendes strappy heels.  Eva Mendes has an affordable fashion line at New York  & Company.  I thrifted this pair from Goodwill in Annapolis, MD, for $7.95.  These were my first pair of Eva Mendes shoes, and can I tell you, if I could wear these heels with everything, I would.  They are amazingly comfortable.  Let me say that again.  These heels are ridiculously comfortable.  Comfortable, beautiful and under $8.  Can you really ask for anything else when it comes to your shoe game.
