How To Look Fabulous In High Waisted Shorts

High Waisted Shorts - Thrifting Diva
High waisted shorts can look fabulous on anyone, and you are missing out  if you are not taking advantage of wearing these summer staples.  Here is the disclaimer however.  All high-waisted shorts are created equal.  There are a lot of variations, so it’s very important to do a little research, and find out what styles look best on your particular body type.

“High waisted” is a rather general term, so you will have to try out more styles and brands to know where you stand.  Sadly, this is one item where trying it on is going to be essential.  In other words, you are going to have to kiss a lot frogs before you find your prince.  But, once you find that perfect style, I guarantee it would have been worth the effort.

High waisted shorts are the business and here’s why.   They are universally flattering for every body shapes.  They are infinitely more comfortable than their low-slung predecessors.  Also, they are best to hide your belly and unwanted bulges, cinch the midriff into a feminine shape (without a corset, thanks very much), and provide shape, and a hint of vintage glam to bodies lacking curves.  The belly button-grazing short (that’s super flattering and leg-elongating, to boot) can be worn to nearly any event as long as you style it the right way.

While some types of clothing look great when they’re oversized, high-waisted shorts do not fall into this category.  To look modern and intentional, these shorts have to fit impeccably.  Too big, and you will look like you’re drowning.  Too small, and you are in danger of looking the opposite of classy.

How To Find The Right Style:  If you are petite, a pair of high-waisted shorts that gently graze the tops of the thighs can add inches to your height. However, it’s best to avoid shorts that have too much volume in their design, as this can easily overwhelm a small frame.  Those who are a bit curvier should choose a pair of shorts that have a bit of flare to them, and are made of soft fabric that drapes well.  The high waist emphasizes the smallest part of your body, balancing the silhouette, and your legs will look miles long.  Tall and slender women can get away with just about any shorts style, and look great in structured, fitted high-waisted shorts with a retro flair.  However, if you have a long waist, be wary of waistlines that are extremely high, or you will risk making your upper body appear stumpy.

I thrifted these Zara high waisted shorts from a Goodwill in Annapolis, MD, and they actually had the tags on it when I swooped it up.  Retail price, $89; my thrifted price, $7.50.  An amazing discount wouldn’t you agree?  As I have mentioned time and time again, thrift stores are your best friends when it comes to trying on new styles.  If you are thinking about taking the plunge and finding a pair of high waisted shorts, first check out your local thrift or consignment store.  If it turns out that this style is simply not for you, your credit card would not have taken the hit.

I styled this high waisted shorts with this absolutely fabulous off the shoulders top.  Check out how I styled it here before with culottes.  Tis the season for the cold shoulders, and I am a huge fan of one of the hottest looks this season.  It t looks flirty, sexy, and classy and makes any outfit stand out.  I received this blouse in a fashion swap with another fashionista, and one of my best FREE items in my closet to date.

Completing this look were these thrifted light Italian leather block heels.  During one of my hosted thrift tours in Washington, DC,  I picked up these heels for $7.50 from a consignment store called Mustard Seed.  Yes, you read that correctly.  These beautiful shoes were less than lunch.  I further accessorized with this cross body purse that I picked up from Marshalls for $9.99.

    1. Kimberly honestly, I google thrift stores in the areas I am in. I will go into any thrift store at least once. You never know what you are going to find. Of course, some are way better than others. But you will not know that unless you enter.

  2. OMG, I LOVE these! Our go-to is to style with a cute tank and chunky sweater as the weather starts to get a little colder. I love that the highwaisted look make shorts look a little more formal too!
