Color and prints are simply my style. So, of course, there is no denying the fact that a few beautiful African prints should be a part of my wardrobe. Ankara, kente, or dutch wax, are all the terms you may have heard to refer to African prints. However, no matter what term you use, the one thing that we can all agree, is that these prints are simply fabulous. Most importantly, you can rock them effortlessly with items already in your closet.
I was offered a discount on this beautiful high waisted ankara skirt from the designers at UniqueAfrik to write a review on a piece from their online store. Honestly speaking, they do have some beautiful prints, which made it very hard for me to choose a favorite. I went with this high waisted ankara flare skirt because I love the bright yellows and the contrasting purple colors in the print. The length is also perfect for me. But, they do have various lengths. I already have my eye on a maxi skirt. Also, a huge bonus with this skirt, is the fact that it has pockets. Skirts with pockets is always a major plus in my book.
I had been searching for ankara skirts for a while now. It has been on my thrift wish list all year. However, I have yet to find the perfect one during my thrifting escapades. When I was approached by UniqueAfrik, I was definitely excited. These skirts can be rather expensive, so I was very happy to see the reasonable prices for their pieces. After my discount, the skirt cost only $48. I consider this a great price for a statement skirt, and these skirts on their own are simply that- statement pieces to every outfit.
I paired this high waisted ankara skirt with this collared pin stripe button up shirt. One of my go-tos, you have seen this blouse here before. It’s a J Crew pin striped button up shirt that I thrifted from AMVETS in San Diego. If you are ever in need of button up shirts, I suggest you check out your nearest thrift store. These shirts normally retail from $40-90, but you can find them in abundance in thrift stores between $2 – $10. Since I am styling a high waisted skirt, I tucked in the shirt to emphasize the high waisted style.
Finally, I went with some simple black BCBG pumps that I thrifted from Buffalo Exchange in San Diego for $11. Since my statement skirt was doing all the work in this outfit, I choose to go with some simple heels.
