I don’t know many mommies out there who doesn’t consider that dreaded “mommy tummy” when they think of their wardrobe. However, one of the best pieces to rock whenever you are a little worried about your mommy tummy is a shift dress. I am a mommy of two amazing little kids, a boy and a girl, ages 8 and 6. I work out, more because I have to due to my military career, but my tummy has never returned to those days where I didn’t have to wonder about what the tummy would look like in an outfit. Now, I get that I might not have a large mommy tummy, but it still does not make me feel entire confident in everything I wear unless there is some great camouflaging going on.
One staple every woman should have in her closet is the shift dress. It’s a timeless classic, this particular silhouette is universally flattering and has stood the test of time. On those occasions where I am feeling even more subconscious about my mommy tummy, I always reach for a shift dress. A shift dress hangs from the shoulders with a column effect that skims the body offering more room through the bust, waist and hips. Shift dresses are very comfortable and is very easy to move around in. The great thing about shift dresses are great at disguising any problem areas.
The only problem is, the same thing we love about shift dresses, namely the lack of waist or hip definition, can also sometimes make you look a little heavy and matronly. Since some shift dresses are looser than others, try to find one that is slightly tailored and skims your curves, so it is not too tight or too loose.
Shift dresses can also be extremely practicable. They can be worn casually, or they can be dressed up easily with the right accessories like a statement necklace or bracelet. You can also pair these dresses with heels, flats, or sandals! Talk about versatile, right!
I found this amazing shift dress from the She Sale Consignment in Annapolis, MD. I blogged about my awesome denim short jumper I got from this sale here. I bought both items at the same time, but on different days. She-Sale Consignment is a seasonal event, happening once in the winter and once in the spring. During this multi-day event, you can purchase women or junior clothing, and home decor and furniture. The prices are absolutely on point, and best of all, each day after the grand opening, most items are discounted by 25%. They host the event in a large recreation center, so you can imagine the very large inventory. Items are neatly hung, there are available dressing rooms to try items on, and best of all for me, it was very organized. Clothing were separated by sizes and types, shoes by sizes. I went on the first day, and the last day when all items that I bought were 50% off. If you are Annapolis October 11th – 15th, then I am telling you that definitely would want to check this out.
I found this amazing shift dress for only $2, as I was there on the last day and nearly everything was 50% off. This dress is actually all sequin, but there are some cut outs in the dress which are sheer. I was amazed that this dress was still hanging there on the last day of the sale. Now, I would admit that on the hanger it definitely didn’t look special. However, it’s the reason that I always say to try things on if you even have a hint of interest. When I tried it on, I immediately fell in love with this shift dress. The details are amazing wouldn’t you agree?
I paired this shift dress with these beautiful Jessica Simpson block heels. You probably remembered these heels styled with this gorgeous yellow dress here. As I was heading out to a casual dinner party with friends, I choose not to pair this shift dress with a very dressy pumps or heels. I love the pops of color on the heels and how it highlights the sequin, sheer shift dress.
Have you tried styling a shift dress lately?
